“Whether you are a human or an Ayakashi, we’re the same in that we meet with our hearts, that being alone is lonely.”
Ever since the day Takashi inherited the Book of Friends, he’s been constantly bugged by creatures from all corners of the spirit world. The process of releasing them often leaves him tired and sleepy. One day he meets two Youkais who begged his help in eliminating a certain human who’s been forcing them out of their humble homes through his high purifying powers. Takashi’s suspicions point to his schoolmate named Tanuma, who too, seemed to have the gift of sight. Even though he’s worried for the existence of the harmless spirits, he’s somehow elated that there is someone who can finally understand him.

This episode is pretty exciting because we got to see Takashi’s first command to a Youkai whose name is written in Reiko’s book. What’s mysterious about all this is whether he will attempt to command Nyanko in the near future to prove that the cat’s name is also written in the book. Remember how evasive Nyanko was in the first episode? I’m not sure though if Takashi knows Nyanko’s common name “Madara”. I understand that the rule is that the owner of the book must call the real name of the spirit so he can command it.
Speaking of rules, I’m intrigued about the extent of Yuujinchou’s powers. It was previously mentioned that whoever owns the book will have the power to control the spirits who were binded to it. That makes it very attractive, however, the real bad Youkais haven’t appeared yet to try to wrestle the book away from Takashi’s hands. Nyanko is even showing signs of impatience. He said something like he’s waiting for a stronger spirit Takashi can’t handle. A quick question comes to mind: Whoever, as in whoever? Even powerless humans can gain this power? From what I’ve seen in many other mahou shows, any magical tool (book, sword, goblet..) requires something first before bequeathing its gift to the rightful owner. In this case though, Takashi did nothing. He immediately gets custody of Yuujinchou because he’s Reiko’s grandson. I also wonder why the spirits didn’t try searching for the book in Takashi’s house. They are invisible, after all.
On a different note, I’m glad that Takashi found friends, and I’m pretty sure Tanuma will be his close friend too. It’s a little ironic though that he seemed to have gained friends only after being pulled deeper into the spirit world by inheriting Reiko’s book. It was shown in this episode that Takashi cried a lot when he was younger, and his only friend at that time was a Youkai pretending to be human. His current friends bring up his weirdness from time to time, but they laughed it off as if it were nothing. That’s nice. They think he’s strange but still treats him as their buddy.
Anyway, I hope some of my questions will be answered in the succeeding episodes. Also, where’s that courage test thing?
