It was over when I only had my underwear left.”

Soul Eater mini-marathon. Long post after the cut.

In episode 12, Medusa is confronted by two witches named Eruka Frog and Mizune. Eruka is not at all glad that Medusa is working undercover at Shibusen, despite it being a plan of the other witches. She believes Medusa’s presence at the School will endanger them all, and she’s worried about her experiment of creating a Kishin out of Chrona. Medusa, ticked off, shoves her two hands inside Eruka and Mizune’s throats, secretly placing several magical and deadly snakes into their bodies. Back in school, Soul admits to Nurse Medusa that he’s been having weird dreams about a certain red demon lately, and he usually ends up sprouting out of Maka’s stomach. Later that day the group reunites in Maka’s apartment to celebrate Soul’s recovery and the triumph of Black Star and Tsubaki on their previous battle against Masamune. While having a good time, Maka sensed the presence of two witches who are Eruka and Mizune confronting Medusa in a dark alley. Meanwhile, Medusa only had to snap her fingers once to kill Mizune. Eruka had the opportunity to transform into a frog when Maka and Dr. Stein appeared, drawn by her presence. However, Eruka couldn’t escape any further since the snakes insider her served as a tracking device for Medusa. Now in the mercy of the evil witch’s hands, she agreed to run an errand for her, and that’s freeing Devil’s Eye who Eruka intends to use for her experiment on Soul.

In episode 13, Eruka successfully frees Devil’s Eye who is not only immortal, but also a fearsome werewolf who is responsible for the loss of an eye of the strongest witch Mabaa-sama. In exchange of his freedom, he accepts the task given to him by Medusa, and that is eliminating Maka and Soul. Devil’s Eye arrives in London where Maka, Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki were dispatched for another mission. Earlier that day Maka and Soul visited Dr. Stein for a private lesson. Their lesson involved resonating their souls by well.. bickering. The lesson was unsuccessful, and it greatly affected their chance of victory against Devil’s Eye. Maka is unable to hold on to Soul’s scythe without her hands being burned, and within Soul’s inner mind he is struggling against the black blood of Medusa which is slowly tempting and eating his body. Tsubaki reprimanded them about their lack of cooperation with each other, and realizing that, Maka and Soul try to resonate their souls once more. They managed to resonate well, however, there was that lingering abnormality that Tsubaki noticed. Devil’s Eye was thrown out of the bridge. He casts a spell in a desperate act to take Maka with him, however, the spell backfired on him. He plunged into the sea enclosed in ice. Meanwhile, up in the bridge Maka and the others regroup, and after exchanging a random joke with Soul, Maka coughed out blood and noticed that its color was black.

In episode 14, the show takes a breather as Maka and her friends cram for the Ultra Note Exam (the collective test for Meisters and Weapons). Blair the magical cat had her most boring day ever when she couldn’t distract anyone from their studies. Later, Black Star breaks into Dr. Stein’s house to steal the exam papers but he gets brutally punished that he wasn’t able to take the exam the following day. As if physical beating wasn’t enough, their professor Sid nailed him to the blackboard and reminded everyone that cheating is wrong. Well, that’s not the policy for Soul. He had his clothes tampered with note papers from the inside, but he hasn’t even answered the first question when he was found out. Desperate, he turns to his seat mate Death The Kid, but the obsessive son of Shinigami isn’t even finished writing his name in perfect symmetry. He turns to his left - Patty, who, instead of answering the exams, turned the papers into a paper giraffe. Her older sister Liz did totally nothing. Meanwhile, Maka and Tsubaki are being normal students, totally focused on finishing the tests. In her mind Maka is determined to beat Ox and become number one like her Mama. Time is running out for all of them, who will make it? Who will not? Poor Black Star, he didn’t have the chance to make the stage that day.

Rating: ★★★★★

What I like about this show is that even the villain has his/her own funny moments. Take Devil’s Eye for example, he goes really cute when he yells “God damn shit,” and there are times when he doesn’t look harmful at all. Friendly in fact, specifically in that scene where Eruka takes him out of the witch’s jail. That frog witch is yet another example of a villain who seems to have a good side and can even be an ally of the Shibusen students. And I haven’t even started with Chrona and that chibi witch Angela. Their slapstick stunts make the aura of the show lighter and much more engaging to watch.

Episode 14 is obviously the breather in the Medusa-Soul arc. I’m not sure if it’s a filler, since I haven’t read the manga yet, but even if it is, I find it an enjoyable episode like the other two. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt that the animators stretch a story a little longer than necessary. Well, as long as the stretch includes a closer look on the major characters like in this case. I didn’t think Patty is that demented, or Death the Kid is really obsessed in everything, including writing his own name. Too bad we didn’t get to see if he can ace an exam because he’s Shinigami’s son.

Looking forward to the next episode!
