Being alone is painful..”

Takashi gets visited by the Dew God, whose name is also written on Reiko’s Book of Friends. Returning the God’s name isn’t easy, for the page where his name was written on is stuck with another Youkai’s, and one careless tear can destroy the spirit’s body. Takashi travels a bit to look for the other spirit, and along the way he learns about the slowly diminishing size and life of the Dew God.

This is a touching episode. Apparently, there’s much more to expect from this show other than spirits jumping on to Takashi to demand their names back. The Dew God, for instance, despite being a side character, has his own rich story and the way it was delivered was very engaging. It’s sad that people nowadays forget their local Gods, just like in the Dew God’s case. He got smaller and smaller as people forget him and eventually disappeared when the last human who faithfully worship him dies. What’s really touching about this is the fact that the God himself had feelings for the human and he was rather glad that he will now be able to touch her in the after life.

The story of the Dew God was actually a surprise because, in the beginning of the episode, it looked as if the story was heading toward Takashi’s first interaction with his classmates. He was seen signing up for some courage test (most likely ghost hunting) and subtle focus was given on the Class Rep Sasada, then he gets chased by a bad Youkai who wants the book for himself (like Mulgarath from the Spiderwick Chronicles), and after that he meets the Dew God. The courage test is pretty exciting but I thought it was weird that the first part was immediately tossed aside as if it didn’t have any significant meaning it all.

On a different note, it’s nice to see some scenes from Reiko’s past every time a spirit is being captured and released. This gives her character some sort of life even though she already passed away. Her personality though is questionable at this point considering how much she bullied, teased and deceived the spirits into writing their names on her book. She seemed to hate humans as well. In the first episode it was suggested that Reiko was like Takashi who’s gentle yet aloof from people because of her gift of sight, but judging from what I’m seeing so far, she seems to be enjoying her power over the spirits. Still, this is just an early assumption based on the two episodes I’ve watched and for all we know she might have been a really lonely Tsundere when she was alive. Not that I have anything against her personality, really. She seems to be a fun character and I hope there’ll be a special arc on her life in the succeeding episodes. Did she fall in love? Did she have some sort of special relationship with Nyanko? Does Nyanko have a human form? His gruff voice is so sexy he could be human.
