“If you think about the person truly dear to you, the tears will flow by themselves.”
It is quite seldom to see a drama that will have one guessing until the end. The norm among highschool love-oriented shows is that the protagonist had already made up his mind about which girl to hook up with an episode before the finale; to give an ample time to wrap everything up in the last episode. This will supposedly give the viewers an unhurried feel about the whole series, and also, to give an opportunity for the other party to recover his or her feelings and give a warm smile while the credits play through.
Well, True Tears is a bold exception of the norm.
Shinichirou is an aspiring story book writer who is in-love with a silent-type girl named Hiromi. He thought his love is one-sided because Hiromi distances herself a lot from him. Then one day, he met a strange girl named Noe. Then things happened.
I had always wanted Shinichirou to end up with Noe, and I had 100% belief that this too, was the intention of the writers. It was a shock therefore to see an ending which is quite unbelievable yet believable at the same time. In love, most people are reckless, irrational and selfish. It is common to wonder why some people end up with the wrong partners, or why some people don’t end up together at all.
Hiromi is not your perfect girl, she had her own shortcomings, but of course I, as a viewer, would always want a happy ending for the character who deserved it. Unfortunately, Hiromi did not deserve such happiness. In my opinion.
Noe is not your perfect girl, she had her own shortcomings too, but her love for Shinichirou was the most admirable of all. It was pure and unconditional. You’d think she’d be the person to ruin a relationship between childhood friends.
Shinichirou is, well, the normal guy. He can love one girl and like another. Sadly, he did not love the right woman. In my opinion.
Jun is the dangerous guy. He’s in-love with his own sister, but he dated Hiromi so he can, probably, get over his feelings and give chance for Noe to be with Shinichirou. I’m against incest–both in anime and reality, but his sincere concern for his sister’s well-being is a real turn-on.
All in all, I liked True Tears better than the other anime drama series that I’ve seen this past season. Somehow, this reminded me of a line from the movie Original Sin. “I love you as I know you. Because I know you. As you are. Good and bad. Better and worse.”
Right. So Hiromi, even though you almost killed Jun because you wanted to see a place without snow, and even though you hurt Noe’s feelings for telling her to leave you and Shin alone, and even though you hurt all three of them because you said you liked Jun but in truth you’re in-love with Shin, I, among other enraged Noe fans, forgive you, because we believe that all is fair in love and war.
Noe, finally you gave away your tears.
